LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) — The La Crosse Hy-Vee launched its “Back-To-School Community Food Drive” over the weekend to help stock the shelves at the WAFER Food Pantry.
Through Sunday, August 23, shoppers can purchase $5 or $10 food bags that include items WAFER needs most. Customers can also round up their total at checkout to the nearest dollar or drop off nonperishable food in the donation bin at the front of the store.
“We don’t have much in our bin, so we’d love to see lots of people come out and fill that bin up,” said Thomas Verschelde, La Crosse Hy-Vee store director. “Anything that you have at home, just bring it down.”
Hy-Vee plans to match all customer monetary donations made during the drive up to $100,000.
The initiative comes as hunger reaches critical levels with approximately one in five children across the nation facing food insecurity.
