WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — As laughter and screams fill the air of the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds, so does the opportunity to help those in need.
“With this we’re putting our feet to the floor and our hands to the pine, so we’re making it work,” said Claudette Lindsay of the Greater Faith Missionary Baptist Church.
Lindsay is the first lady at the church in Winston-Salem. She has volunteered with her fellow church members at a food booth at the fair for the last 15 years as a way to help raise funds for church missions.
“We do things like coat giveaways,” said Lindsay. “We give to the youth. Food giveaways, especially now with the economy going on. We have people who are struggling.”
They sell fish, chicken and pork chops, but they’re best known for their collard green sandwich.
“They say, ‘We’ve been looking for booth No. 6,’” said Lindsay. “That’s what we’re looking for because there are other booths here that sell collard greens, but they say we do a special touch for them.”
Forty to 50 volunteers run the booth through the week, changing shifts as needed for various jobs, from cooks to cashiers. Lindsay says it’s their biggest annual fundraiser, bringing in thousands of dollars each year.
“We try to do our part in the community to make sure we serve,” said Lindsay. “We’re here to just help, so when we raise the funds, we don’t have to limit to what we can give to the community. We can just make sure we can spread it abroad.”
The church will have its booth open each day for the rest of the fair, which runs through Oct. 11.
