Foodland’s Lilha branch is shutting down after a 75-year run.
HONOLULU (KITV4 Island News) — Foodland Supermarket is closing its Liliha store on School Street later in September, the company confirmed to KITV4 Island News Wednesday. The location has been around for nearly 75 years.
The Honolulu-based grocery store chain said the closure, which is scheduled for the end of business on Sept. 24, is a result of the expiration of the store’s lease next year.
Opened in 1949, Foodland’s Liliha store has nearly 50 employees, and those workers are expected to be offered placement options at other Foodland locations on Oahu, the company said.
“Closing a store we have operated for 74 years is not something we take lightly – especially because of the impact it will have on our loyal customers and employees,” said Jenai Wall, chairman and CEO of Foodland, in a statement to KITV4. “While we are saddened to exit this location, the ongoing parking challenges and smaller store size make it difficult for us to serve our customers well.”
The Foodland stores located closest to its Liliha store are Foodland Dillingham, Foodland Farms Ala Moana and Foodland Market City.
Foodland was founded in 1948 by the Sullivan family. It currently has 31 stores and more than 3,100 employees, Sack N Save and Foodland Farms stores on four islands.
