When Bar Louie opened on the ground floor of the former BB&T building in downtown Owensboro, it shared the building with corporate call center Alorica. That was 2017. Nearly five years later, in August 2022, Bar Louie closed, which surprised me.
The dining space at 234 Frederica Street eventually welcomed Big Whiskey’s, which held its grand opening on August 15th, 2025. Now, less than 14 months later, Big Whiskey’s has announced that it has closed indefinitely, effective October 5th, 2026.
Here’s what we know…
Could Big Whiskey’s Return to Owensboro?
The closure announcement leaves open the possibility of a return. According to a notice posted at the business, opportunities to bring Big Whiskey’s back to Owensboro under new ownership are being explored.

However, the announcement does not explain why the business closed, identify a new owner, or provide a timetable for reopening. For now, Big Whiskey’s remains closed, and a return is a possibility rather than a confirmed plan.
Big Whiskey’s Was Kentucky’s First
The Owensboro opening marked the chain’s arrival in Kentucky. Its menu featured burgers, wings, and other American fare, alongside a selection of whiskeys and bourbons. The downtown space also offered an outdoor patio and private dining areas.
Before Big Whiskey’s arrived, the former Bar Louie space had another brief chapter. In January 2024, building owner Gulfstream Development announced that it was available for events while the company looked for a long-term tenant.
For those of us who remember Bar Louie’s arrival and then welcomed another dining option into that familiar downtown space, today’s news marks another change at 234 Frederica Street. Whether Big Whiskey’s will have another chapter there remains to be seen.
