Every meal supports people living with or at risk of HIV and helps local restaurants recover from Operation Metro Surge.
MINNEAPOLIS — Restaurants across the state are teaming up for the annual Dining Out For Life fundraiser for AIDS service organizations.
On Thursday, April 30, 2026, 119 Minnesota restaurants will donate at least 25% of the day’s profits to the Aliveness Project.
Aliveness Project is a nonprofit, community center and clinic that serves Minnesotans living with or at greatest risk of HIV. Last year, Aliveness Project served 60,848 meals and distributed 340,205 lbs of groceries. The theme of Dining Out for Life this year is Dine Out. End HIV. Love Your Neighbor.
“A barrier we have been navigating is the climate of fear and trauma created by ongoing ICE raids,” said Sonya Bieza, Development Manager at Aliveness Project. “Regardless of immigration status, many of our members experienced heightened anxiety, and were afraid to leave their homes which can impact their willingness and ability to access services consistently. In response, our team stepped up to deliver meals and medications directly to people’s doors so they were safe and cared for. We have been blown away by how our restaurant partners have continued to show up for their neighbors even when they’re struggling too.”
Bieza says almost every participating restaurant has felt the impact of ICE operations. Backstory Coffee reports staff being “followed, filmed, and intimidated.” The Gay 90’s says employees are “afraid to come to work.” Hell’s Kitchen has seen foot traffic drop, and J. Selby’s now keeps doors locked as fear keeps both staff and customers away. Despite these challenges, they are still choosing to give back to Aliveness.
All proceeds from Dining Out for Life support Aliveness Project. Each day, their kitchen serves more than 200 people living with HIV and facing food insecurity or housing instability.
“Every meal is made from scratch with intention designed to meet the increased nutritional needs of people living with HIV while creating a welcoming, stigma-free space. I want everyone who comes through these doors to feel a sense of agency and choice,” said head chef Constance Peruski. “Many of our members don’t get that in other parts of their lives, so here, we make sure they do.”
“When people are hungry, it affects everything, their mental health, their wellness, their ability to get through the day,” Peruski said. “You can actually see that change happen when they sit down to eat. People feel nourished in their mind, body, and soul.”
