Cub Foods owner will sell 3 Minnesota grocery stores to local franchisee

Cub Foods owner United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) is selling three of the grocer’s Minnesota stores to Edina-based Jerry’s Enterprises, one of its largest franchisees.

UNFI will sell Cub stores in Minneapolis, St. Anthony, and Monticello to Jerry’s. Terms of the sale, first reported by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal, were not disclosed.

A representative for UNFI tells Bring Me The News that the sale is part of “ongoing efforts to strengthen the business” and provide a consistent shopping experiences across its stores.

Located in the Uptown neighborhood, the Minneapolis store that just sold was temporarily closed for more than two months last summer, worrying many nearby residents that it would never reopen.

Jerry’s currently operates many Cub locations throughout the Twin Cities, including locations in Eden Prairie, Edina, North Branch, Woodbury, and Hudson, Wisconsin.

“Jerry’s has a proven track record of operating high-performing Cub stores and delivering a great experience for shoppers, and this transition will allow for continued investment in these locations while supporting Cub’s efforts to build a strong, more competitive network across Minnesota,” the UNFI statement says.

Rhode Island-based UNFI purchased Cub as part of its 2018 acquisition of Supervalu and later unsuccessfully attempted to sell off the business.

Last year, former Coborn’s Inc. President and COO David Best was named CEO of Cub following consistently negative sales growth under the nearly two-year tenure of his predecessor, per the Star Tribune.

Around that same time, a Cub store shuttered in St. Paul’s Midway neighborhood and the Uptown location closed for repairs and maintenance.

The Cub Foods stores purchased by Jerry’s are located at 1104 Lagoon Ave. in Minneapolis, 3930 Silver Lake Road in St. Anthony, and 216 Seventh St. W. in Monticello.
