A new Vietnamese cafe and restaurant is set to debut in NoMad next year.

Annam Tan, from Chef Chidensee “Joel” Watthanawongwat, Kittiya Mokkarat and Supatta Banklouy of Sawasdee Hospitality, will open at 33 E. 33rd St.

The team currently operates acclaimed Thai restaurants Soothr and Sappeisan. They waited to find the ideal location to introduce the chef’s Vietnamese roots to the city.

“The inspiration for Annam Tan is Chef Joel. His family can be traced back to Vietnam. He grew up with Vietnamese influence—the food, the language, the culture. During the war, his grandparents left Hanoi and traveled south along the Mekong River before settling in northeastern Thailand,” partner Ratthee Rueangpisansin told Whatnow New York City.

The interior will capture the essence of Vietnam, with the team fine-tuning every detail after recently traveling to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City for inspiration to bring back to New York.

Upon entering, guests will find the Annam Tan cafe, serving Vietnamese coffee sourced from Vietnam. The cafe will also offer banh mi, a Vietnamese sandwich made with a crusty baguette, savory meats, pickled vegetables and fresh herbs.

The authenticity will continue into the dining room. While the restaurant’s menu is still in development, the chef plans to serve classic Vietnamese dishes with Indochine influences.

“We’re going to give it some twists with a modern technique. It’s going to be elevated. It’s Chef Joel’s journey through Thailand and New York City,” Rueangpisansin said.

Ingredients will be sourced locally in New York for freshness, with select products brought in from Vietnam to preserve traditional flavors.

The team looks forward to expanding its culinary portfolio.

“We are excited about the audience. We have been known for Thai food for seven years, but now we are offering something new. It’s going to be a whole new perspective,” he said.

Annam Tan plans to open in early February 2027. Follow along on Instagram for the latest updates.
