NEWPORT, R.I. (WJAR) — The Newport Playhouse & Cabaret Restaurant will close its doors at the end of the year, ending a 43-year run as one of Newport’s longtime entertainment destinations.

President and owner Jonathan Perry announced the decision Thursday.

The Playhouse was established in 1983 and has operated as a dinner theater, restaurant and cabaret, bringing together live performances, dining and entertainment under one roof.

Perry, who has run the business since his father’s death in 2015, said the decision to close is a personal one. After decades of running the venue, he wants to spend more time with his family.

The announcement came as performances were still taking place, with patrons continuing to fill the theater and cabaret.

For performer Nadine Goulet, the news came just months after she finally got the chance to perform on the Playhouse’s cabaret stage. Goulet had been a patron for about 17 years before joining the cabaret in March.

“I’m so excited that I could be part and check that off my bucket list,” said Goulet.

The Playhouse will continue hosting performances through Dec. 31. Perry said the final months will include special shows featuring people who have been part of the Playhouse over the years.

The venue’s final night will include a New Year’s Eve celebration and midnight toast.

For now, the show goes on. For the next few months patrons can return, see a performance and make one more memory at the Newport Playhouse.
