LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – The parent restaurant group that owns multiple restaurants, including Honest Abe’s in Lincoln, has pulled leafy green products due to the recent cyclosporiasis outbreak.
GroundUp Restaurants also owns Stauffer’s Cafe, Vic’s Pizza & Guppies Food Services, according to its website.
The company said it pulled bagged lettuce, spinach, berries and other ingredients linked to the outbreak to be safe.
At this time, none of its vendors have raised concerns about its products.
Health department reports 5 cases of cyclospora in Lancaster County
The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department confirmed five cases of cyclospora in Lancaster County on Thursday.
Cyclospora is a parasite that can cause a lengthy gastrointestinal illness and is currently linked to multiple outbreaks throughout the U.S. People become sick when they eat food or drink water contaminated with the parasite.
One of the five cases confirmed this month was related to international travel. In June, three separate cases related to international travel were reported to the Health Department.
The LLCHD said federal health officials and state and local health departments continue to investigate to pinpoint the source of the outbreaks.
LCHD said they typically see cyclospora cases over the summer each year and current case numbers are not above average at this time. Fresh vegetables and fruit are usually associated with cyclospora outbreaks.
The illness does not spread from one person to another.
Symptoms of the illness include watery diarrhea that can last weeks to months, fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, bloating, cramping and nausea. Less common symptoms include low-grade fever and vomiting.
