RAPID CITY, S.D. — Feeding South Dakota has launched a produce program that will help stock pantry shelves in Rapid City and across South Dakota with fresh fruits and vegetables.
According to Feeding South Dakota, support from The Wellmark Foundation and John T. Vucurevich Foundation will let the group provide produce at no cost to more than 230 agency partners across the state. Feeding South Dakota expects the program to distribute thousands of pounds of fresh produce each year.
“Feeding South Dakota has always been committed to providing healthy food. It’s not just about providing food, it’s about providing the right food. So last fiscal year, we distributed about 78% of the food was food that encourages a healthy diet,” Jennie Palmer, development officer at Feeding South Dakota, said.
Feeding South Dakota said fresh produce is often one of the first items cut when grocery budgets get tight and one of the hardest items for partner agencies to get. The organization said the program is meant to increase healthy food options while freeing up resources for pantries and shelters.
