Which pet products were recalled in Washington state?

On Sept. 3, Fi of New York City recalled supplements for dogs because they “have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella” due to an ingredient supplied to Fi’s manufacturer.

Bacterial contamination can cause foodborne illnesses.

The recall affects two varieties of supplements available in 180-gram doses:

Fi Calming supplement for Dogs: Lot No. 26118

Fi 8-in-1 Formula supplement for Dogs: Lot No. 26159

Universal product codes for the recalled products were 8 50064 80011 1 and 8 50055 11168 4.

“The manufacturer has suspended production while it investigates” the source of the contamination,” the recall notice said. “Fi is promptly notifying all affected customers out of an abundance of caution.”

Where were recalled dog supplements sold?

The recalled supplements were distributed directly to consumers and through online retailers Amazon and Chewy.com, the FDA said.

Which pet food was recalled for salmonella, listeria?

On Aug. 28, pet food company Northwest Naturals in Portland, Oregon, issued a voluntary recall for 53 cases of cat food and 19 cases of dog food.

Northwest Naturals recalled the products after discovering “salmonella or listeria monocytogenes contamination,” which can cause foodborne infections.

Northwest Naturals recalled a frozen cat food that doubles as a protein topper for dogs, as well as frozen raw dog food.

Here’s which products have been recalled:

What are health risks for people and animals?

Animals who ate products contaminated by salmonella or listeria could get sick.

There’s also a “potential risk to humans” who handled contaminated products or waste from animals who ingested the products, the FDA said.

“This risk is greater if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having had contact with the products, surfaces exposed to these products, or animal waste,” the federal agency said.

What are symptoms of bacterial infection in pets?

According to PetMD and the FDA, symptoms of salmonella or listeria infection in pets include:

Diarrhea or bloody diarrhea

If your pet is showing symptoms, contact your veterinarian.

“Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or people,” the FDA said.

“People infected with salmonella should monitor themselves for … nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever,” the FDA said. “Most people recover without treatment, but in some people, diarrhea may be so severe that they need to be hospitalized.”

What should I do if I bought recalled pet products?

If you bought recalled Fi supplements, stop using them, “make sure the container is tightly sealed, and dispose of it in the trash,” the FDA said.

You can call Fi with questions at 1-888-434-3647 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week or email the Fi support team at support@tryfi.com.

People who bought recalled Northwest Naturals pet foods should stop giving them to animals and “return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund,” the recall notice said.
