YAZOO CITY, Miss. (WLBT) – For many of you who lost power during the winter storm, one of your biggest concerns has been where your next meal will come from.

The Mississippi Department of Human Services is reminding SNAP benefit recipients about a way to provide food for you and your family, and be reimbursed for doing so.

“For existing SNAP clients, there is a process for those affected by the storm and have a power outage over four hours,” said Mark Jones, Chief Communications Officer for MDHS. “They may go to the MDHS website and submit an attestation for loss of food.”

You have less than 10 days to get your application in to get the process started.

“What that means is you fill out the 508 – the attestation for food loss – on the MDHS website. Submit it. Our case managers will process that, and then they will take that money and put, at some point over the next five to 10 days after you submit that, back onto your EBT card,” Jones added.

Nancy George receives SNAP benefits. She is one of many Yazoo City residents riding out the ice and the cold weather in a shelter.

She said she recently had to throw out all her food due to the power being out, so she was glad to hear about this reimbursement program.

“That’s cool. I mean, that’s really cool. The state of Mississippi helps people,” said George. “I put $400 in the freezer worth of food, and now we’re going to have to throw it all out.”

The Mississippi Department of Human Services said this was already a benefit for SNAP users, but want to make it clear you must submit your application by Feb. 3 to receive your reimbursement.
