SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — KUTV 2News launched a new segment tracking what Utah families actually pay at the grocery store.

Every Monday, I’ll buy the same four staples: milk, eggs, bread, and beef, and report the real-time cost.

This week’s run was at Walmart.

Milk was standard across the board. The store-brand price didn’t budge, whether you grabbed whole, 2%, or skim: $2.82, which was less than the $3.29 a gallon I paid the week before at Smiths.

A dozen Walmart-brand eggs came in at $1.97, also slightly less than the $2.09 I paid for a dozen Smiths-brand eggs the week prior.

Bread was all over the price map. Shelves ranged from $1.50 bargain loaves to $5.99 specialty multi-grain options. I paid $2.92 for Wonder Bread, also cheaper than the $3.49 I paid at Smiths.

Beef prices varied widely based on cut. The bone-in New York strip I picked up was marked down $3.25 to $12.32 for a 1.1-pound steak. The previous week at Smith’s, I paid $10 for 0.6 pounds, with a Smith’s reward discount shaving off $3.25.

After tax, the four items totaled $20.63 compared to $16.72 the week prior at Smith’s. Bread, eggs, and milk were all cheaper at Walmart, and the bang-for-my-buck on beef was also better at Walmart.
