GREENBURG, Ky. (WBKO) – The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels presented a $3,000 check to support the Blessings in a Backpack program in Green County on Tuesday.

The donation will help ensure students in Green County have food to take home on weekends during the upcoming school year.

Sherry Crose, executive director of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, said the organization has supported nonprofits across the state.

“We were able to grant 2.6 million to 318 nonprofits across the Commonwealth. And Greene County Ministry Association is one of those. So it’s delightful to be down here in Greene County and we’re able to help the Blessings Program with a $3,000 grant,” Crose said.

A community-wide effort

The Blessings in a Backpack program is a collaborative effort between the Green County Food Pantry, the school district, and the Green County Ministerial Association. The program relies entirely on volunteers.

Adam Marcum, president of the Green County Ministerial Association, described how the program operates.

“We purchase the food, we organize, you know, getting church groups, youth groups, things like that to come in, pack bags. We get them to the school, school resource officers, then distribute those to the students on Fridays,” Marcum said.

Now in its third year

Marcum said the program is now in its third year and has become a resource for families in the community.

“Past couple years we’ve averaged 90 to 100 students per month that are getting these blessing bags. And then we have, we’ve done a lot of budgeting and trying to cut that price down. So 150 bucks sponsors one child for an entire school year,” Marcum said.
