Alexis CrandallSAINT ALBANS CITY, Vt. —

A lot of new restaurants are finding a home in St. Albans City. Along Main Street, it’s become common to see a “coming soon” sign in the window, including at the Ralston’s building. It was recently renovated and now includes a restaurant on the first floor.

“Everyone always asks me ‘why St. Albans?'” said Cafe Monette owner Adam Monette. “I’m always like, ‘why not St. Albans?'”

Monette said the new eateries are just part of the good things happening in the city.

“There’s so much going on,” he said. “All these new businesses are percolating up here slowly. St. Albans is beautiful, Taylor Park is awesome. There’s a lot of things going on within St. Albans.”

Just up the street, workers are preparing one of the storefronts at the St. Albans shopping center for Burlington Bagel Bakery’s fifth location. It will be a homecoming for the owners, who are from the area.

Downtown manager Arleigh Young said it’s not just the number of restaurants finding a home in the Rail City, but the types of cuisine available.

“We’ve learned from data that people are really interested in food and food culture. It’s growing all the time,” she said. “We’re so excited to have not only a lot of restaurants, but diversity in those restaurants. Everything from high-end to mid-range to cheap, low-scale, easy-to-grab stuff.”

Young said she hopes when people stop by St. Albans for a bite to eat, they also take the time to check out some shops in the area.
