The first time I ever went to Kentucky Fried Chicken, now KFC, Owensboro’s only store was at the corner of Frederica Street and Lafayette Drive. It was a tiny place. You might have been able to eat inside, but I honestly don’t remember seeing any seating.

Later, it moved to South Frederica, and that’s where I sank my teeth into what remains my all-time favorite KFC menu item.

I’m sorry, folks, but it wasn’t chicken.

My Favorite KFC Memory Involves Ribs

KFC used to serve incredible ribs with the most amazing sauce. And, boy, were they meaty. My sister and I loved them, and we still talk about them.

Those ribs didn’t last long, but KFC did.

Now, however, Owensboro is reaching the end of that run, according to a new report.

Owensboro’s Last KFC Is Closing Permanently

Owensboro Times reports that the city’s last remaining KFC, at 3212 KY 54, will close permanently after today, Friday, October 9th. The outlet cited a store manager in its report.

I attempted to reach the store by phone but was unable to get through. An exact closing time and the reason for the closure were not included in the Owensboro Times report.

Remembering KFC on Frederica Street

Owensboro Times also notes that the former KFC at 4911 Frederica Street closed in 2015. That building later became a Krispy Kreme before welcoming Owensboro’s first Chipotle in 2022.

For me, this news brings back memories of that little place at Frederica and Lafayette and those ribs my sister and I would gladly order again.

For others, it might be a bucket of chicken brought home for a family supper or a favorite side that always had to be part of the order.

What do you remember about Owensboro’s KFC stores? And does anyone else remember those ribs?
