This month, a brand new restaurant opened its doors in New Brunswick: Halal Munchies!Located on 213 French St., the restaurant is a twenty-minute walk from the Yard at the College Avenue campus, but worth every step.

Halal Munchies serves platters in every form. With the choice of lamb, chicken, falafel, kofta or tenders, it feels like there are options for everyone!

Here’s an example of one of the wonderful platters they served!

The dishes come with either spicy or plain rice, the choice of fries and salad. On top of that, you can choose from one of their many sauces, including classics like white and hot sauce. For this review, we tried their mixed platter with plain rice and loved it.

The meat, in particular, was a standout — cooked fresh in front of you and served warm. Combined with wonderfully flavored rice and fresh salad, it makes for the perfect meal.

We sampled their tender boxes too. Featuring wings or boneless chicken tenders, the boxes offer the choice of a few pieces or many, so you’ve got the option to grab a box of three pieces for yourself, or a box of twenty to share.

Choose from one of their many sauce options, each with a different spice level. We tried the mango habanero sauce on a box of boneless tenders. The tenders were soft and served piping hot. The mango habanero sauce complemented it well, with a tangy yet strong kick. Pro tip: Dip your fries in some of the sauce, and it’ll leave you wanting more.

Halal Munchies has a massive selection of add-ons, so customization’s always encouraged!

The extensive menu features a variety of sandwich variants. Try one of their gyros, coming with meat, fish or falafel. The menu caters to any food restriction, whether that be vegetarian or zabiha. They also have chicken sandwiches, cheeseburgers and fish sandwiches.

With this large a menu, bring friends and share all the restaurant has to offer! Wealso tried the Philly cheesesteak and still dream about it. The portion size is easily shareable at a whole twelve inches long, plus the meal is filled with all sorts of add-ons — sliced beef, grilled onions, peppers, mayo and melty cheese.

The interior of Halal Munchies also helps you feel comfortable and come back. Sit at one of their numerous tables and catch up with friends or take a look at the giant mural lining their wall. The entire store is decorated to the max with art pieces and light-up signs.

The kitchen is in the main storefront, with glass walls that onlookers can peer into to watch the chef’s craft. The workers will be more than welcome to chat with you or have you watch. We had the pleasure of speaking with a few of them and were greeted with laughter and open conversation. Come for the food, but stay for the people.

Visit Halal Munchies this weekend for a fun lunch with some friends. Head into the store and enjoy a meal at their storefront or order out and have it brought to the comfort of your own home. Either way, we wish this business the very best at their new location!
