BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Police are searching for two people wanted on multiple charges after a shooting inside a Baton Rouge restaurant stemmed from a complaint over a food order, according to investigators.

Daylin Woods, 18, and Savannah Spears, 21, are wanted for attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of weapons, and criminal damage to property in connection with the Feb. 2 incident at LJK Round 2 Café.

What investigators say happened

According to Cpl. Saundra Watts with the Baton Rouge Police Department, Woods and Spears ordered food at the restaurant, then called back after paying and leaving.

“They called back to the restaurant expressing their dismay with their order. They were very irate over the phone. They were using derogatory language, cursing out the employee on the phone,” Watts said. “Then they show up back at the restaurant. They continued with the arguing and cursing and using foul language and being very abrasive to the employee at that establishment.”

Watts said the restaurant owner asked the two to leave, but they refused. The owner was shot in the midsection and transported to the hospital. She is expected to make a full recovery.

Staff used code word to reach safety

Watts said restaurant staff had been trained with a code word ahead of the incident.

“That employee did, or that owner of that business did educate her staff with a code word, which is very detrimental in this case because it allowed those employees to get to safety, alert authorities, and we could respond in a timely manner,” Watts said.

Employees used the code word to hide in the walk-in freezer and call police.

Gunfire exchanged inside restaurant

Investigators say Woods placed a handgun on the counter, armed himself, and fired. A restaurant employee returned fire. Woods and Spears then fled the scene.

“Mr. Woods and his girlfriend, Savannah Spears, fled the scene. But prior to fleeing the scene, they fired two additional rounds at the restaurant before leaving the scene,” Watts said.

Security camera footage was used to piece together the sequence of events.

“They produced a handgun, they fired shots, someone was injured, that person’s life could have been ended over something menial, such as an order that you weren’t pleased with,” Watts said.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Woods or Spears is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 344-STOP.
