NEW YORK (Kyodo) — A sushi expo in New York, touted to be the biggest of its kind in the United States, drew many Japanese-food fans and businesspeople Sunday, treating them to unlimited samples and tuna-cutting shows.
Over 60 companies participated in Sushi-Con 2026, giving visitors a chance to taste everything from fresh tuna and wagyu beef to wasabi and green tea.
Excited visitors looked on as a bluefin tuna weighing over 300 kilograms was cut into pieces during a show.
The expo also allowed visitors to purchase exhibited food items at discount prices and have them delivered.
An official from one of the exhibiting firms said plans are in the works to boost production capacity in the United States as the popularity of Japanese cuisine has been growing.
Japanese exhibitors included the Imuraya group, known for traditional “wagashi” sweets, and the maker of the Otafuku brand of “okonomiyaki” pancake sauce.
