DURHAM, N.C. (WBTV) – A man was shot at a Harris Teeter grocery store in North Carolina over the weekend, police said.

The shooting happened shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11, at the grocery store on Highway 54 West near Fayetteville Road, right off I-40 in Durham.

Durham police said they were called to the Harris Teeter after a security guard shot the man. The man allegedly tried to steal from the store and was approached by the security guard. The two then reportedly began to fight before the security guard shot the man.

Witnesses told CBS affiliate WNCN that the man used mace against the security guard before the shooting.

Police said both the man and security guard were taken to a local hospital but were expected to survive.

Police did not say if anyone would face charges in the case.

The Harris Teeter where the shooting happened is in the Southpoint Crossing shopping center, and is surrounded by several restaurants and other businesses.

Harris Teeter has its roots in North Carolina, having opened its very first store in Charlotte back in 1960. The grocery chain has since grown to include more than 250 stores and 60 fuel centers across seven states and the District of Columbia.
