Kroger is closing 60 stores by the end of 2026, and at least 39 of those locations — spanning 15 states — are already shut down.
The company disclosed the closures in its first-quarter 2025 earnings release, revealing a $100 million impairment charge tied to the closures and saying the move would deliver a “modest financial benefit” it planned to reinvest into the customer experience.
Employees at affected stores would be offered jobs at other locations, the company said.

“We’re simplifying our business and reviewing areas that will not be meaningful to our future growth. Unfortunately, today, not all of our stores are delivering the sustainable results we need,” Kroger Chairman and interim CEO Ron Sargent said.
“To position our company for future success, this morning, we announced plans to close approximately 60 stores over the next eighteen months.”
Kroger has not released an official list of which stores or banners are affected.
By Aug. 26, 2025, Grocery Dive had already tracked 39 stores slated for closure across nine of Kroger’s banners — 18 of which had already shut down by that date.

A MassLive review this month confirmed all 39 of those identified locations are now closed.
They span the Kroger, Fred Meyer, Fry’s Food and Drug, Harris Teeter, Jay C Food Stores, King Soopers, Mariano’s, Pick ‘n Save and QFC banners.
