Holiday food drive runs Oct. 15 through Nov. 15 at 11 dispensaries statewide as CalFresh changes take effect and food banks head into their busiest season

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Oct. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Perfect Union and Wild Seed Wellness are turning dispensary lobbies into food drive drop-off points this holiday season. Together with more than 20 partner cannabis brands, the company has committed to donate more than $10,000 worth of food to local food banks across California. From Oct. 15 through Nov. 15, adults 21 and older can drop off non-perishable food at 11 participating stores. Every item stays local and goes to a food bank in that store’s own community.

Store teams will deliver all donations on Nov. 17 and 18, about a week before Thanksgiving on Nov. 26. That gives food banks the weeks they need to sort donations, stock pantry shelves and hand out holiday meals.

“Our annual food drive is a tradition our teams look forward to all year,” said Tom Sheridan, Esq., CEO of MWG Holdings Group, Inc. “We are proud to deliver hundreds of holiday meal favorites, from turkeys to potatoes, to local food banks so families across our communities can gather around fresh, festive dinners this season. We invite everyone who is able to join us by dropping off donations at any of our stores before Nov. 15. Together, we can help fill more tables than ever.”

Why Every Donation Counts This Year

California food banks are heading into the 2026 holidays with more people coming to them than usual.

National: Nearly 48 million people, including 14 million children, experienced food insecurity in 2024. That’s according to USDA data cited in Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap 2026 study.

California: About 1 in 7 people and 1 in 5 children face food insecurity, according to the same study.

Food bank demand: California food banks have served about 6 million people per month since 2024, according to California Food Banks (formerly the California Association of Food Banks). At the height of the pandemic, they served 4.5 million. Regional food banks also reported demand up 15% to 40% from the year before.

CalFresh changes: More than 5 million Californians use CalFresh, and benefits average about $190 per person per month. State estimates say 600,000 to 665,000 recipients could lose benefits under new federal work rules. Oct. 1, 2026, was the first date those terminations could take effect.

Local impact: The changes are already reaching food drive communities.

In early October, Sacramento County had about 1,500 CalFresh cases under review.

Stanislaus County, home to the Turlock store, had 657 cases under review.

In Yuba County, home to the two Marysville stores, 148 residents had already left the program.

Less outside support: Under the 2026-27 state budget, federal TEFAP food support to California falls from $62 million to $22 million. State CalFood funding returns to its ongoing level of $8 million, down from $80 million the year before. These figures come from the Legislative Analyst’s Office.

San Diego: Food insecurity in San Diego County has passed peak pandemic levels, according to Feeding San Diego. About 429,530 residents are affected, including more than 123,000 children.

Story Continues

California Food Banks’ 43 member food banks serve all 58 counties. Local donations help them keep pantry shelves full through the busiest time of year.
