ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU/KTVF) – The Spenard neighborhood drew a crowd as a food truck carnival brought together residents and out-of-state visitors looking for a range of dining options.
Anchorage resident Tatyanna Hill said the format appeals to those who want flexibility over a traditional sit-down experience.
“I just try different foods honestly because like I mean restaurants are nice but like sometimes I don’t want to sit down,” Hill said.
Laila Hill, visiting from San Antonio, said the selection stood out compared to what she was used to back home.
“I feel like there’s more variety. I feel like we’ve never seen Russian places,” she said.
According to the Alaska Dept. of Environmental Conservation, Alaska now has more than 300 food trucks (FN-3 permits) — a number that has grown over the last five years.
New vendor tests the waters
Among the newer additions was Puerto Domi Delight, a family-owned food truck serving Puerto Rican and Dominican cuisine. Estarlin Costemontero said it was the business’s first time at the carnival and their first time operating out of a trailer.
“Last year we started actually in tents in the downtown market. We started in tents and now thank God for a blessing that we have our own trailer now,” Costemontero said.
Costemontero said mobility gives the business an advantage over opening a traditional restaurant.
“It’s good to have a trailer because like we move around with this trailer and people get to know us. That’s just a great opportunity. I think it’s honestly better to have a trailer,” Costemontero said.
Costemontero said Puerto Domi Delight plans to return to the carnival.
