Your successful hunt could feed Wyoming families facing hunger. Food from the Field takes donated game meat, processes it and then donates it to food programs throughout the state.
The Food from the Field is a statewide partnership between the Wyoming Hunger Initiative, the Wyoming Game & Fish Department, the Wyoming Department of Agriculture and participating meat processors. Hunters can donate all or a portion of their harvested deer, elk, moose or antelope, which is processed and distributed through hunger-relief organizations and food pantries across Wyoming.
Participating processers in the Big Horn Basin are Paintrock Processing in Hyattville and Wapiti Valley Meats in Wapiti.
Jennie Gordon, First Lady of Wyoming, said, “Food from the Field is a wonderful example of Wyoming people taking care of Wyoming people. Partners like Paintrock Processing have been incredible in helping us turn a hunter’s harvest into nutritious food for a neighbor in need. We are so grateful for their willingness to be part of this effort, and I encourage hunters across Wyoming to consider donating all or a portion of their harvest this season. Together, we can share Wyoming’s bounty and make a meaningful difference in communities across our state.”
Gordon noted WHI helps cover the cost of processing the donated thanks to the sale of Governor Commissioner tags. At the same time, she encourages hunters to contribute toward the processing if they are able. Gordon also explained that you don’t have to be a hunter to participate. Anyone can help by donating funds to help with the processing fees. All donated deer, elk and moose undergo appropriate Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) testing before the meat enters the food bank system.
