Statewide Analysis Identifies 439,115 Standing Acres and 47,229 Acres Removed

October 15, 2026 (Sacramento, CA) — The California Association of Winegrape Growers (CAWG), in partnership with industry grower and vintner associations, has released the results of the 2026 California Winegrape Mapping Project, providing a detailed statewide view of winegrape acreage.
The analysis identified 439,115 acres of standing winegrape vineyards as of August 1, 2026 and 47,229 acres removed between August 1, 2025 and August 1, 2026.
“This project reflects our industry coming together to invest in better information at a time when we need it most,” said Natalie Collins, CAWG president. “The findings put numbers to changes growers are experiencing firsthand, and behind those numbers are difficult decisions affecting families, employees and local businesses. Acreage is adjusting to a difficult market, but as we work to rebuild demand for California wine, we have to make sure the growers at its foundation are still farming when that demand returns.”
Conducted by Land IQ, a Sacramento-based agricultural and environmental science firm, the project uses advanced remote sensing, artificial intelligence and on-the-ground field verification to map vineyard blocks statewide. Results are summarized by county, Crush District and American Viticultural Area (AVA).
Standing acreage encompasses bearing, non-bearing, minimally farmed, mothballed and abandoned vineyards where vines remain physically in the ground. The mapping does not distinguish among these categories or determine whether an individual vineyard is commercially active.
Now in its second year, the project builds on the inaugural 2025 mapping with a refreshed annual snapshot of standing vineyard acreage and removals. The update incorporates newly captured vineyard acreage, classification changes and refined field boundaries. Newly captured acreage should not be interpreted solely as new 2026 plantings.
The interactive mapping tool allows users to compare the 2025 and 2026 layers and explore changes in California’s vineyard footprint.
