ORLANDO, Fla. – Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced the expansion of his office’s investigation into potassium bromate, a flour additive linked to cancer, issuing a new subpoena to Performance Food Group, one of the nation’s largest food distributors.

Speaking during a news conference in Orlando on Friday, Uthmeier said the subpoena covers the company’s Miami and Orlando operations and seeks records dating to 2023, including what products are in the distributor’s warehouses, who is purchasing them, and where they are going.

Records are due by Nov. 6. The move follows an earlier subpoena to General Mills after investigators found potassium bromate in flour products traced to Florida school cafeterias.

“We’re never going to allow people here in Florida to choose profit over public safety,” Uthmeier said.

Potassium bromate is used as a flour improver and dough conditioner in some bakery flours. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies it as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” It has been banned in the European Union, Canada, China, India and several other countries.

The U.S. has not banned it.
