The newly opened Baton Rouge location of Prince St. Pizza at 6556 Siegen Lane brings a little slice of New York all the way down to the Deep South.

Pizza is a long-standing American favorite. Much like churches or gas stations, you cannot drive 5 miles in any direction without being confronted with a pizza shop.

While there is much debate surrounding what style of pizza across the United States is the best, one type that is always at the top of the conversation is none other than New York City.

Prince St. Pizza is New York through and through. Opening in Manhattan in 2012, the evergrowing pizza chain was started by the Morano family and born from the idea that anything you can put on pasta could also be put on pizza.

The company’s pizzas come in all shapes and sizes, from Sicilian SoHo squares to traditional New York-style round ones. Patrons can get a personal pizzetta, a slice or even a whole pie. That is not to mention the numerous sides and desserts if you do not already feel your mouth watering.

One thing that sets New York pizza apart from the rest is their hallmark softer and chewier dough with the crispy edges; Prince St. Pizza makes sure its pizza never loses that quality by replicating the water used in New York through a unique water filtration process.

With all this history and attention to detail, the pizza is bound to be good, right? After all, the pizzeria’s website touts them as the “Best Pizza in Baton Rouge” after barely being a week on the scene.

Well, the Prince St. Pizza website lists a few menu favorites, so I would be remiss to not use these as recommendations.

I tried two slices of pizza and one of their signature desserts to get a well-balanced look at what the pizza shop had to offer.

The first dish I took a stab at was a slice from the spicy vodka pizza. This pie combines their handcrafted spicy vodka sauce — which is emphasized as containing Prosciutto — with fresh mozzarella and pecorino romano.

Prince St. Pizza’s spicy vodka pizza is a simpler and more bare pie, but do not let that lead you to believe it is anything less than delicious. Its uncomplicated nature elevates it to help focus on the saucy star of the show.

The spicy vodka sauce is plainly delectable, as a rich and creamy tomato-based mixture that is supported by the spongy pillow of dough beneath it. My only wish is that this sauce emphasized the spicy part of its name. However, this is what my second slice was for.

A slice of the naughty pie was next up on the docket. This piece elevates the spicy vodka sauce by adding in pepperoni, fresh mozzarella, ricotta and a bit of Zab’s Hot Honey.

If the spicy vodka pizza was delightfully simple, the naughty pie takes that and infuses it with a smorgasbord of strong savory flavors. The cupped pepperoni adds a fiery bite and crispy texture while being backed up by the sweet and subtle warmth of the hot honey.

With all these competing bold flavors, the cooks at Prince St. Pizza thoughtfully added a dollop or two of ricotta on top. This light and nutty addition breaks apart all of the salt and spice to help bring everything together.

Of course, I had to wash my pizza down with one of the house-baked chocolate chunk cookies. This succulent treat is a brown butter cookie featuring chocolate chunks and flakes of sea salt peppered on top.

This treat is the ideal cookie — utterly gooey inside with a slightly crispy outside and a generous helping of chocolate chunks to boot. The sea salt flakes are a perfect add-on, giving the cookie a chance to let those sweet flavors shine even brighter.

Overall, I am more than satisfied with my experience at Prince St. Pizza. It boasts a range of unique pizza options made with thought and care, made with more quality than most pizza shops I can think of.

Calling the company the best pizza in Baton Rouge is quite the claim, yet they seem to have the food to back it up.
