Just three months after nabbing a spot on our food critic’s top banh mi list, a longtime sandwich staple has served its last baguette.
French Sandwiches opened on the Northwest Side in 1990, according to the San Antonio Current. The unassuming food hub tucked between a hair salon and a smoke shop served an international array of options, including a turkey club on a croissant, a fajita chicken sandwich and the classic Vietnamese sandwich.
It is not clear why French Sandwiches, formerly located at 8448 Fredericksburg Road by the Medical Center, closed after 36 years. The shuttering was quiet, reported earlier this month on Yelp and Google by hungry patrons. Its land line is now disconnected.
John F. commented on Yelp that he had eaten at French Sandwiches since 2003. “Going to miss this place,” he wrote.
One Yelp reviewer wrote that the tenant next to the sandwich spot said the restaurant closed due to a health situation in the family that owned the restaurant, though the San Antonio Express-News has not verified this claim.
Sutter also mentioned owners Duc Phung and Ha Nguyen’s Chef’s Continental sandwich — a baguette stuffed with pork sausage, peppery pâté, sliced chicken, mayo and “the whole garden bouquet of cucumbers, onions, pickles, carrots, daikon and cilantro.”
He wrote that the restaurant was too small to bake its own bread, so the owners contracted with a family member who runs a bakery.
