SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) -A vital resource for affordable, nutritious food has returned to the streets of Sioux Falls.
The Sioux Falls Mobile Market officially relaunched on Monday, marking a new chapter in the fight against local food insecurity following the loss of a previous mobile grocery service. Through a new partnership, organizers are working to ensure that low-income residents and those with limited mobility have direct access to fresh groceries.
The mobile market is scheduled to visit seven sites throughout the week, operating in two-hour time blocks directly within the neighborhoods that need it most.
For residents who rely on public transportation, the service is a game-changer.
“Somebody who only rides the bus, they’re only able to take so much on the bus, right?” said Amber, an organizer with the mobile market. “So if you come because I’m down the street from you, you’re able to grab a little bit more.”
Unlike traditional food assistance programs, the mobile market is open to anyone. There are no sign-up processes, and shoppers are not required to show identification.
“This is a no-judgment zone,” Amber said. “Everyone is welcome.”
The relaunch is made possible through a unique partnership with Fair Market, a discount grocery store located at 33rd Street and Minnesota Avenue. Fair Market sponsors the mobile market’s entire inventory, allowing organizers to keep prices low while keeping quality food out of landfills.
In addition to standard stock, the market accommodates shoppers with special dietary needs if they call ahead, helping families stretch tight budgets.
“When you’re faced with challenges and you’re faced with, you know, $14.00 left in your bank account, you have to be creative,” Amber said.
Shoppers stepping onto the truck are greeted by a wide variety of grocery staples, with a heavy emphasis on fresh produce. Complete meal ideas are kept in mind as the truck is loaded.
“I’m grateful and blessed at the opportunity that Fair Market and Empower Sioux Falls had this idea,” Amber said.

Amber says the work is meaningful and it’s a pleasure to wake up and do something she loves every day.
