LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – A Lexington-based nonprofit is asking for community support to continue feeding the city’s most vulnerable.

Each Saturday, volunteers gather at a kitchen to prepare meals for hundreds of people in Lexington.

“We start here about two in the afternoon and make our sandwiches and then put the meals together and then we just walk downtown in a group,” one volunteer said.

The First United Methodist Church in Lexington is the home base for the Kentucky Food Ministry, which began in 2019.

Serving the community

The ministry serves the unhoused and low-income communities of downtown Lexington, but volunteer Betsy Lampe said they will feed anyone.

“You can have a place to live, but that doesn’t mean that you have food security,” Lampe said.

Lampe said she has been volunteering for a little over a year and has noticed an increase in need during that time.

“Some Saturdays we were making 80 meals, but its more like 140, 150, and if we have enough volunteers, we do about 240 or 250,” Lampe said.

To continue serving those in need within the Lexington area, the ministry needs the community’s help right now. The organization is currently in the process of fundraising $20,000.

Organization leaders said the money helps provide stability for the ministry and would cover a year’s worth of meals for the area, as well as any additional operating costs.

“Its just a need that is continuous, and we hope to be the hands and feet of Jesus, giving to others. Going to where they are and not expecting them to come to us,” Lampe said.
