Detroit style pizza is getting national love! One local pizzeria has earned a spot on Food & Wine magazine’s list of the 27 best pizzas in America, giving Detroiters another reason to brag about their hometown’s signature square slices.
Michigan & Trumbull Pizza is the Detroit restaurant featured on the list, with its Long Drive Home pie earning special recognition. The pizza combines vodka sauce, sausage, mozzarella, Parmesan and banana peppers for a flavorful twist on the city’s beloved style.
The restaurant’s story is just as memorable as its menu. Detroit natives Nathan Peck and Kristen Calverley discovered their love for making Detroit style pizza after moving to Pittsburgh. They started serving their creations there before bringing the business back home in 2020.
Since then, Michigan & Trumbull has built a following among locals who appreciate its creative approach to pizza. The restaurant eventually moved to its current location on Holden Street in Detroit in 2023.
The national recognition also highlights how Detroit style pizza continues to make its mark beyond Michigan. Known for its thick crust and square shape, the hometown favorite has become a standout in America’s diverse pizza scene.
