UPPER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) — A popular restaurant on Manhattan’s Upper East Side is preparing to serve its final meal after more than four decades in business.

“I’m going to miss the fact that they always know what we’re going to order,” customer Jonathan Steinman said.

The Owner of Mezzaluna, Aldo Bozzi, said quality has been the focus since he opened the restaurant 42 years ago.

“There was some mediocre olive oil around — you know the one that you find in the basic super market? So I imported my olive oil,” Bozzi said.

The olive oil came straight from Tuscany, helping bring authenticity to Mezzaluna and contributing to its long-running success.

“My daughter is inside with her friends. They used to come here when they were in high school. We have three generations of customers,” Bozzi said.

Despite the restaurant’s success, rising business costs in New York City have made operating more challenging.

Those costs, along with a costly renovation ahead, led Bozzi to decide against renewing his lease for another 10 years.

Mezzaluna is scheduled to close Nov. 1. However, at 86, Bozzi is not ready to retire, and his customers may not be ready to let him.
