Buc-ee’s may have a stranglehold on American drivers when it comes to picking a pit stop. Others like Prasek’s, The Texan, and outsiders like Love’s and Allsup’s compete to see who will stop by and, more importantly, who will order food. Turns out, they all pale in comparison to one tiny outpost in a North Texas town.
Bristol General Store, located 28 miles south of Dallas in Ennis, has been ranked the No. 1 gas station restaurant in the U.S. by SIXT, a German car rental and mobility services company. Bristol beat out Billeaud’s Meat & Grocery in Broussard, Louisiana, and Joe’s Kansas City BBQ in Kansas City, Kansas, to claim the top spot. Why did it claim the top spot? Sushi.
Founded by husband and wife real estate professionals Eric and Jennifer Keathly in 2022, Bristol General Store may appear like a run-of-the-mill gas station, but inside awaits an extensive menu of sushi and oriental offerings. Fresh rolls, sushi towers, nigiri/sashimi, deep-fried rolls, baked rolls and much more are all available to anyone who stops by.
“When Jennifer and I bought this store four years ago, we never imagined a little gas station in a town of 750 people would be named No. 1 in America,” Eric Keathly said in a statement to MySA. “But this recognition isn’t just about us. It’s about our incredible employees, our loyal customers, and the wonderful people of Bristol who have supported this store for years. We are incredibly proud to represent our little town on a national stage. We want people to know that you don’t have to be in a big city to find amazing food, great people, and something truly special. At the same time, Jennifer and I are proud to continue serving our real estate clients and growing our thriving real estate business while investing in this community.”
The ranking highlighted Bristol General Store’s 4.7 rating on Google Reviews as a factor in its No. 1 ranking, and the dozens of responses illustrate how popular the gas station’s sushi has become.
“It’s true! This place does have great sushi!” Molly Kisner wrote on her 5-star Google review. “I’ve lived in Japan and my husband makes sushi regularly. Plus, the staff was so, so kind to myself and my kids! I would go out of my way to stop by here again.”
“Stopped by Bristol General Store expecting just a typical gas station good but was pleasantly surprised to find really good sushi,” Shreeprasad Sonar wrote in his Google review. “We tried the vegetarian sushi and the Texas roll, and both were amazing, especially for a place like this.”
“The sushi is amazing!” Jason Taylor wrote in his Google review. “I go to a lot of sushi places and for the most part they’re all the same. This place genuinely has some good flavor and the ingredients are fresh. The jalapeños are crisp and have that signature vibrant fresh taste and really pops in the sushi. If you’re into fresh jalapeño flavor, it’s very nice! Otherwise, just the salmon and tuna alone speaks for itself. I didn’t try the crab or shrimp options, but they looked good.”
Bristol General Store is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Sunday.
Other Texas spots to land on SIXT’s Top 20 list were John’s Backyard Grill in Dallas (No. 6), Flamin Burger in Kyle (No. 14) and Czech Stop in West (No. 15).
