AAA added nine hotels and two restaurants to its Four Diamond lists this month, including restaurants in Providence and Boston and a hotel on New Hampshire’s Lake Winnisquam.

The organization announced the designations Monday. Its inspectors make unannounced visits to evaluate properties on cleanliness, comfort, cuisine and consistency.

The newly designated restaurants are Claudine in Providence, Rhode Island, and Mooncusser in Boston, Massachusetts.

Hotels span the United States and Mexico

The Lake Estate on Winnisquam in Tilton, New Hampshire, is among six U.S. hotels receiving the designation.

The others are Hilton Phoenix Resort at the Peak in Phoenix, Arizona; Hyatt Regency Denver at Colorado Convention Center in Colorado; Sandbourne Santa Monica, Autograph Collection in California; W Minneapolis-The Foshay in Minnesota; and White Elephant Aspen in Colorado.

Three Mexican properties also joined the list: Campos Polanco and Le Meridien Mexico City Reforma, both in Mexico City, and Royalton Riviera Cancun, An Autograph Collection All-Inclusive Resort & Casino in Cancun, Quintana Roo.

What the designation covers

AAA said Four Diamond properties are recognized for accommodations, dining and service. The designation is part of its inspection program, whose lists change monthly as inspectors visit hotels and restaurants throughout the year.

Four Diamond hotels represent about 7% of nearly 23,000 AAA Diamond lodging listings, according to the organization. Four Diamond restaurants account for about 10% of nearly 5,400 restaurant listings.

AAA currently counts roughly 1,750 Four Diamond hotels and 500 Four Diamond restaurants. Its highest tier, Five Diamonds, includes about 145 hotels and 65 restaurants.

The organization has conducted in-person property evaluations since 1937. Its broader inventory includes more than 28,000 hotels and restaurants across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica and the Caribbean, divided among Five Diamond, Four Diamond, Three Diamond and Approved designations.

AAA publishes its current Diamond lists through its newsroom’s Diamond section, with property information also available through its Trip Canvas travel-planning service.
