ATLANTA — Atlanta’s only city-owned grocery store is reporting success since its September opening.
“Azalea Fresh Market” wanted to bring fresh produce and healthier food options to downtown. According to the city, there have been more than 150,000 visitors.
“The opening of Azalea Fresh Market locations in Downtown Atlanta and Campbellton represents an opportunity for residents who have long faced barriers to healthy, affordable food. Every family deserves the ability to purchase fresh produce, and nutritious meals close to home, and these investments are helping meet the needs of these communities,” said Mayor Andre Dickens in a press release. “The momentum we are building is creating healthier neighborhoods, strengthening local economies, and ensuring that all Atlantans have access to the resources they need.”
Since opening, daily revenue is up 20% and its owner, Paul Nair, says the store helps address a food desert.
“The next Azalea Fresh Market location will increase buying power, customer service, and economies of scale,” said Nair in a press release. “This growth allows us to deepen our commitment to solving food-access issues while continuing to support Georgia vendors and local communities.”
The store is privately operated by Savi Provisions and a second location in Campbellton Plaza in southwest opens this fall.
Fulton County says Campbellton Road is severely affected by limited access to fresh food.
