New shopping options coming to Oldham County as area grows

County leaders recently approved plans that would bring a new home improvement store and grocery to the area

BUCKNER, Ky. —

Leaders just approved plans for new retail space in Oldham County. The development comes as the area rides a wave of growth.

The Buckner Commons development was approved at an Oldham County Planning Commission meeting on June 23. The more than 30-acre development along Commerce Parkway and Highway 393 will bring:

101,504 sq. ft. home improvement store 55,453 sq. ft. grocery store with an attached 3,200 sq. ft. liquor store Hundreds of parking spaces Six outparcels near the road for other possible businesses

There is no official word on what businesses will be moving into the buildings yet. The site is being developed by Prime Property Development. Developers behind the project said at the meeting that commitments have been made.

The only member of the commission who voted against the development is Berry Hampton, who expressed skepticism over the completion date.

“I like the development a lot, but I think it’s unrealistic … the proposed construction dates,” Hampton said at the meeting.

Sandy Hamilton, president of the Oldham County Chamber of Commerce, calls the investment a win for the area.

“We’re excited about it. It’s great for Oldham County,” Hamilton said. “That whole area is filling up nicely, and we love the growth.”

The new development follows other additions in the works across the county, as the area continues to see growth. Just across the street from the site, work is underway on a new bank and space for an auto manufacturing plant.

Oldham County magistrate Kevin Jeffries has watched the adage, “retail follows rooftops” play out.

“As you get more homes built and apartments and those kinds of things, then that draws more of these companies into the county,” Jeffries said.

Workers are in the first phase of constructing units in a large mixed-use development in Crestwood, similar to Norton Commons. It’s called Clore Station, and its master plan includes 3,000 residential units.

Work also continues at a new hospital in Crestwood. In La Grange, “Oldham Reserve” is another mixed-use development 20 years in the making.

“Oldham County is continuing to grow. We’re at a little over 70,000 population now,” Jeffries said. “I think these companies are looking at Oldham County as a place they want to be.”

Developers hope to begin construction at the end of this year on the grocery store and home improvement store. The retailers that have committed to the spaces hope to be open by 2028.
