Six Lafayette restaurants were cited for one or more critical violations by the Louisiana Department of Health in recent July inspections.

Three of the restaurants were dealing with flies, roaches or other rodents. And two of the eateries also did not have an employee with a food safety certification, according to records from the health department.

The health department’s retail food health inspections dashboard includes a history of each establishment’s inspection reports, allowing residents and visitors to make informed decisions as consumers, according to their website. Inspections are a “snapshot” in time and do not always reflect the day-to-day operations and overall condition of an establishment.

According to the website, violations fall into two main categories, critical and noncritical. Critical violations, if left uncorrected, are more likely to directly contribute to food contamination or illness. Noncritical violations are not directly related to the cause of food-borne illness, but if left uncorrected, could become critical.

Some of critical violations listed below were corrected on site, and others will be checked again at a later date.

Park Bistro, 407 Brook Ave., Lafayette, was cited July 17 for having roaches present in the restaurant.

The Churro’s Boutique, 5725 Johnston St. PK 19, Lafayette, was cited July 16 for flies present in the eatery and for no employees or managers having a food safety permit.

Sakura Teppanyaki, 5725 Johnston St. Suite A266, Lafayette, was cited July 16 for mislabeling of prepared food (cabbage), cross contamination of raw and prepared food and for flies present. The restaurant fixed the two latter violations, both repeated offenses, during the inspection.

Old Tyme Restaurant, 218 W. Saint Mary Blvd., Lafayette, was cited July 15 for rodents present in the establishment.

Crumbl, 2668 Johnston Street Suite A2, Lafayette, was cited July 17 for having roaches and other insects present inside the restaurant.

Kay’s Ice Cream, 5725 Johnston St. Suite K03, Lafayette, was cited July 16 for potential food packaging contamination (corrected on site) and for not having a manager, owner or employee with a food safety certification.
