MADISON, Wis. (WKBT) — Wisconsin farmers are at the center of a national conversation about trade policy and rising costs as Democratic lawmakers push for greater support for rural communities.

During a press call organized by the political advocacy group “Defend America Action”, State Senator Brad Pfaff and other Democratic leaders highlighted the financial strain facing American farmers and questioned national priorities regarding agricultural support.

“Farmers who grow the food that we enjoy and we need; they can barely break even. But yet we as consumers, we go to the store, we are seeing prices go up and up. Something isn’t working out,” Pfaff said during the online event.

The disconnect between farm-level economics and consumer prices reflects a broader challenge in the agricultural sector. Farmers are operating on razor-thin margins while grocery store shelves display increasingly expensive products, creating frustration among both producers and shoppers.

Pfaff used the platform to challenge policymakers to examine their priorities. “Who and what are we prioritizing as a nation. Are we prioritizing our family farmers, and our rural communities, and our rural residents? Or are we playing partisan games?” he asked.

The remarks underscore growing concerns about the viability of family farming operations across the Midwest. Trade disputes, supply chain disruptions, and input costs have combined to squeeze farmer profitability in recent years, forcing many agricultural operations to make difficult decisions about their future.

Minnesota Congresswoman Angie Craig also participated in the press call, adding her voice to the discussion about the need for federal support and policy changes that benefit rural America.
