KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) – Even with his restaurant’s lights out and his grills running on a limited menu, Matthew Montgomery, the owner of the nationally acclaimed KC Turkey Legg Man, knew he had to feed the people who were helping his community heal.

Following a damaging storm that knocked out power to thousands across Wyandotte County, utility crews from Capital Electric arrived near 18th Street and Quindaro Boulevard to begin setting poles and repairing.

Inside the darkened kitchen at 1916 Quindaro Blvd., Montgomery watched the crews work.

“I saw Capital Electric was out here putting us back up, and I had like 10 legs left. I went over and just donated them to the guys just for putting in the work and getting us back up and running,” Montgomery said.

He noted how deeply he appreciates the sheer physical effort being put in across the metro to clean up the severe storm debris.

For Montgomery, whose restaurant gained national fame last year when it was named one of the New York Times’ 50 Best Restaurants in America, the gesture was second nature.

“Definitely, that is what we are all about—community and family, and coming together,” Montgomery said. “Because without them, you know, I can’t run. I appreciate them, and I appreciate them for all the families out here who have been without power, and who still need help.”

While electricity has officially been restored to the Quindaro Boulevard corridor, KC Turkey Legg Man is not quite operating at full power. The restaurant is still working to get its gas line reconnected, which Montgomery hopes will be completed by Saturday.

Until the gas is back on and full inspections are complete, Turkey Legg Man will be open but serving a limited menu.
