The Carmel’s restaurant business, property, equipment, liquor licenses and recipes are all being offered for sale.

TOLEDO, Ohio — An iconic Mexican restaurant in west Toledo could have new life.

Carmel’s, which closed in July after more than five decades in business, is now for sale.

And it’s not just the building, the entire business is up for grabs, according to a real estate listing.

That includes the real estate, liquor licenses, furniture, fixtures, restaurant equipment and the recipes – including Carmel’s signature margarita recipe, although no price was listed.

Carmel’s was a staple for generations of families, its colorful décor and comforting food providing a backdrop for a half-century worth of memories.

Dozens of customers and former employees shared their thoughts on the gathering place as they said goodbye after the closure was announced.

Carmel is one of a handful of Mexican restaurants in Toledo that have been around for decades including Loma Linda and El Tipico.

Carmel’s first home, which opened in 1969 as a carryout only establishment, was on Oak Street in east Toledo, according to the obituary of its founder Rhoda Baldwin, who died in 2010.

Before long, the growing business made its way to the current location on Tremainsville Road near West Alexis Road.
