In the mood for a really good cheeseburger? A small-town Alabama grocery store was recently lauded as having the best in the state.
Tasting Table released its list of “the best cheeseburger in every state” this week, and J&J Grocery & Deli in Bessemer was their pick to represent Alabama.
The no-fuss burger stop, which started serving hamburgers in the ’80s, has become known for its hand-patted burgers, which are made each morning and cooked on a well-seasoned grill. In 2014, J&J Grocery & Deli was a finalist in AL.com’s statewide search for Alabama’s Best Cheeseburger.
The deli made its big-screen debut this month in “The Rivals of Amziah King,” a crime thriller starring Matthew McConaughey, which filmed scenes at J&J Grocery in 2023.

Tasting Table determined which burger joint should represent each state based on their reputations and history in addition to social media as well as national and local reviews, according to the website.
“This spot was a Tasting Table pick for best hole-in-the-wall burger shop in Alabama for its juicy, well-seasoned burgers with great house sauce,” the website states. “In particular, the double bacon cheeseburger here stands out above the rest. The place has widely been touted as having some of the best burgers in the state, but more specifically, Google reviewers have waxed poetic about the bacon cheeseburger or double cheeseburger (or both).”
Other burger joints to make the list include The Chastain in Atlanta; Toasty’s Tavern in Louisville; Sylvain in New Orleans; Latham’s Hamburger Inn in New Albany, Miss.; Melvin’s Hamburgers and Hot Dogs in Elizabethtown, N.C.; Brown’s Diner in Nashville and more.
