The biggest fan of Griff’s Hamburgers in the Shreveport Bossier area just might be Gary Michael Selby.
The first “Griff’s Burger Bar” opened in 1960 in Kansas and there were 65 locations nationwide by the mid-1960s.
Selby told The Shreveport-Bossier Advocate that for him it’s “a nostalgia thing.” He said when he little, his dad would take his sister and him to walk around the base and then to Griff’s because it was cheap and good. “I know it isn’t the best or fanciest burger around, but when you walk in you know exactly what you’re getting – a good old fashioned no frills fresh-made burger.”

I feel the nostalgia too. I remember visiting Griff’s as a small child as an outing because people didn’t eat out nearly as much as is now common. Usually my mother cooked dinner seven nights a week, so a visit to Griff’s was a treat – a yummy burger complete with a vanilla milkshake.
When I moved back to Shreveport several years ago, I was surprised to learn that Griff’s Hamburgers was still around. Today, only about a dozen locations of Griff’s remain, in Shreveport, Bossier and Ruston and the rest in Texas where the headquarters is now based.
The slogan is “Great Tasting Food at an Affordable Price” and I can vouch for that. On a recent visit, I ordered a combo with a small double cheeseburger, french fries and medium drink. The meal was delicious, and I couldn’t believe the grand total was only $7.66.
Other menu items at Griff’s include chicken, steak and fish sandwiches, steak fingers, hot links, and onion rings.

Fried mushrooms are only on the menu at certain locations, and Selby wishes they would return to our area. I wouldn’t mind trying them too.
Griff’s Hamburgers is located at 2910 Linwood Ave. in Shreveport, at 2920 Old Minden Road in Bossier, and 815 W. California Ave. in Ruston.
