HONOLULU (KHON2) — Cleanup crews have begun removing spoiled food from the closed Happy Days Chinese Seafood Restaurant in Kaimukī.
The long-standing establishment was forced to shut down following a partial roof collapse on Aug. 18.

The Honolulu Fire Department reported that an approximately 40-by-40-foot portion of the roof gave way, prompting the evacuation of the building.
Four people were evaluated at the scene, and one person was taken to a hospital.
Following the collapse, the City and County of Honolulu Department of Planning and Permitting determined the structure was unsafe to occupy, preventing crews from entering to remove food left behind.
Officials said the spoiled food contributed to odor and pest concerns for nearby residents and businesses.

On Sept. 24, DPP determined the kitchen area could be safely accessed for limited cleanup operations.
The restaurant’s insurance provider approved a contract for professional cleaning services, and work began Tuesday, Sept. 29.
Crews are expected to finish removing spoiled food from the kitchen by Oct. 2.
