Three Indian seafarers rescued from a cargo ship attacked in the Black Sea have left Romania for India, the Indian Embassy in Bucharest said on Saturday.
Two foreign crew members were killed and several others were injured in the attack.
The three men, Ashwini Kumar, Sahil Sandhu, and Harman Singh, were rescued from the Turkish-owned cargo ship MV Royad Mammadov on October 6.
The ship was carrying corn from Ukraine’s Izmail port to Ravenna in Italy when it was hit on Monday. At the time, it was sailing in the Black Sea outside Romania’s territorial waters. The nationalities of the two crew members who died have not been confirmed.
The Indian Embassy helped the three survivors return home and thanked the Romanian authorities, Constanța County Hospital and Romanian rescue teams for their assistance.
All three Indians survived the attack, but one was injured and needed medical treatment in Romania.
On October 7, an embassy representative visited the men. Two were staying at a hotel, while the third was being treated at the County Hospital in Constanta. The embassy said all three were in stable condition.
The embassy also arranged mobile phones and other essential items through the shipping company’s local agent. It arranged Indian food from a local restaurant and stayed in touch with the authorities to provide further help.
The attack took place while the ship was carrying Ukrainian grain to Italy. The incident raises concerns about the safety of crews working on commercial ships in the Black Sea.
However, the available information does not say whether the attack delayed the cargo or affected other ships in the area.
India is the world’s second-largest supplier of seafarers, according to the BIMCO-ICS Seafarer Workforce Report 2026.
The report puts the number of Indian maritime professionals at 311,936, accounting for 12.16% of the global seafaring workforce.
The Philippines ranks first, followed by India, China, the Russian Federation and Indonesia.
