I decided to take a week off from visiting restaurants and put on my “do good” hat. That’s my charity hat, in case you’re wondering. And wouldn’t you know it, I found a fundraiser involving two of my favorite things: tacos and tequila, so much for staying away from restaurants.

Before we get started, here’s a little trivia question: Which came first, the taco or tequila? I’ll have the answer at the end.

This Friday, November 6, the Rotary Club of South Pasadena is holding its Tacos & Tequila Fundraiser at the Lost Parrot Cafe, 1929 Huntington Drive in South Pasadena, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

The money raised will benefit the South Pasadena High School Interact Club, which is working on a project to build a house in Mexico.

For those unfamiliar with Interact, it’s a Rotary-sponsored organization that gets high school students involved in community service. In this case, the students are taking their efforts across the border to help a family in need.

“One evening of tacos and tequila could help give a family a place to call home,” said Charissa Kurera, Interact Club Chair and coordinator of the fundraiser.

I think that’s something worth supporting.

Now, let’s talk about the tacos.

For $65, adults 21 and older can enjoy unlimited tacos and margaritas. There’s also a $90 option that includes a premium tequila flight. Younger guests, ages four through 20, pay $25 for unlimited tacos and agua fresca. Children under four are free with an adult ticket and reservation.

Mocktail margaritas will also be available.

The organizers are calling it a family affair, and I like that. Parents can bring their children and show them that helping others can be fun, too.

One word of advice: If you’re planning on enjoying unlimited margaritas, make sure somebody else is planning on driving home.

Unlimited tacos and drinks are available while supplies last, and reservations are encouraged because seating is limited.

I’ve been covering restaurants in the San Gabriel Valley for a long time, and I’ve learned that restaurants do more than serve food. They’re places where neighbors gather and occasionally raise money for something worthwhile.

This Friday is one of those occasions.

And now the trivia answer: The taco came first, with roots in Mexican food traditions that predate tequila as we know it today, although its exact origins are debated.

Personally, I’m glad somebody eventually thought to put the two together.
