LOUISVILLE, Ky. — By the end of the month, stores inside Mid City Mall will start closing one by one.

First up is ValuMarket, a grocery store. The store began slashing prices this week to sell off inventory, with only the bare necessities left on shelves.
“It’s definitely scarce here,” said supervisor Troy McGruder..
He said all products are on display.
“One point in time, it were, there was a lot of eggs. We had butter, cheese. Pretty much the refrigerated, dairy part, smaller refrigerated things,” McGruder said.
The store has been open at this location since 2005, and he’s worked there for the last four years.
“Our deli department, they closed a little early. They closed yesterday. Their last day was yesterday. The meat department as well. So that’s that’s two departments already, like out for the count,” McGruder said.
He said they stopped stocking about a week ago.
The grocery store is part of Mid City Mall, owned by Branch Properties. Branch Properties plans to demolish the current site and construct new buildings, changing the overall site layout.
The mall was listed for sale in Nov. 2024.
Customer Diane Kirven said she’s shopped at the neighborhood grocery store since she was a young kid.
“It’s the only thing I mean, the shelves are way more empty than I thought,” Kirven said.
But she’s looking forward to the change.
“It hasn’t changed much since the A.M.P. when I was. Well, A.M.P is on the other side, but the Mid-City Mall in general has – it’s needed a facelift, I think, and I’m glad for the neighborhood. A lot of neighbors are not happy with it. You know, the Cherokee Triangle. I’m in the Triangle and I love updates and improvements,” Kirven said.
McGruder said the store started discounting items this week to sell off inventory before its last day while operating on reduced hours.
ValuMarket’s last day is June 30. A neighboring nail salon will close on Aug. 31. It is moving to a new location.
