DECATUR, Ala. (WAFF) – The Decatur Police Department partnered with the Food Bank of North Alabama on Saturday to help provide food to families in the community.
The organizations set a goal of helping about 500 families during the department’s first food giveaway.
Two lines of cars moved through the parking lot at Decatur City Hall as families picked up food boxes filled with nonperishable items and fresh produce.
Organizers say the distribution came at a time when rising costs are putting additional pressure on family budgets.
“Price of diesel’s gone up, and when that happens, you know, that causes the price of food to go up. So, people are really kind of feeling the pinch right now, and we saw that with, we saw a lot of people out today, and people were really thankful, people were really gracious,” said Bobby Bozeman, Development Director with the Food Bank of North Alabama.
Decatur Police Investigator Demetrius Hightower said the department wanted to help address those needs while strengthening its relationship with the community.
“It’s very important considering that gas prices are very high. Money itself is at a standstill as far as in many organizations and things like that. And the perfect timing for us to do it was great because we even had the community itself that still wanted to come out despite their struggles and help somebody else,” Hightower said.
Organizers say the event was about more than distributing food. They say it was an opportunity to lend a hand to people in the Decatur community when they need it.
The Food Bank of North Alabama works with community organizations to connect people with food assistance throughout the region.
