Kroger started construction on two new stores in Dearborn and Commerce Township. The company will spend more than $70 million, and they expect to create nearly 350 jobs in Metro Detroit when the projects finish. Both stores replace older sites, with openings set for 2027.
The Dearborn store sits at the southwest corner of Ford Rd and Mercury Drive. Kroger is investing $35.5 million at this site. The building spans 122,983 square feet and will house a full-service deli/bakery, a seafood department, a smart-service meat department, a sushi counter, and a pharmacy with drive-thru pickup. Officials estimate the Dearborn Kroger will create about 200 jobs. Expect the store to open in June 2027.
Commerce Township’s store occupies the southwest corner of Springvale Drive and Haggerty Rd., where Kroger is putting $34.5 million into the building itself. An additional $3.5 million goes toward a fuel center. The 103,000-square-foot structure will feature Murray’s Cheese shop, a full-service deli/bakery and seafood section, a smart-service meat counter, and a pharmacy with a drive-thru option. The Commerce Township Kroger expects to create 150 new jobs when it opens in May 2027.
“We’re thrilled to bring two brand-new locations to our Kroger shoppers in Dearborn and Commerce Township,” said Troy Harding, president at Kroger’s Michigan Division, which has 15,000 associates in the state, according to DBusiness Magazine. “These stores represent our deep commitment to bring fresh, affordable groceries to residents and families across Michigan.”
Both buildings replace older stores with modern, state-of-the-art buildings that offer expanded fresh departments, pharmacy access, and convenient pickup service.
Competition for superstore space is fierce in the Metro Detroit area. Store competitor Meijer announced it will open a supercenter in Plymouth Township on Sept. 30. That brings Meijer’s Michigan store count to 130 stores. The 159,000-square-foot supercenter is located at 48025 Five Mile Rd. and stocks produce, grocery staples, bakery items, meat, seafood, and deli offerings. In addition, this store has a floral area and a garden center, and has an apparel and home goods section.
Meijer opened a 75,000-square-foot grocery location on Aug. 19 at 33500 Seven Mile Road in Livonia. This marks the fourth Meijer Grocery in Michigan, adding to the retailer’s 125 supercenters and market locations across the state.
In May 2026, the superstore chain opened a 47,000-square-foot Meijer Grocery in Rochester Hills.
