LANSING, Mich. (News 10) – Several mid-Michigan organizations are receiving state grants to expand food production and processing and strengthen local food supply chains.
The grants are part of $2.3 million awarded through the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to support underserved, value-added and regional food systems and supply chains.
Grow Jackson will receive more than $68,000 to purchase equipment for processing locally grown grains.
Mitten State Malt in Okemos will receive more than $43,000 to produce malt for Michigan breweries, while Blue Mitten Farms in Okemos will receive $100,000 to expand its greenhouses.
ARK Companies in Charlotte will receive more than $57,000 to expand its food processing and cold storage facilities.
MDARD Director Tim Boring said the grants will help support farms and food businesses while creating jobs and improving access to locally produced food.
The funding is intended to strengthen Michigan’s regional food systems by helping businesses expand production, processing and distribution capabilities.
