The Cheyenne City Council annexed and rezoned about 18 acres of land north of Del Range Blvd., next to Sam’s Club. The parcel is now called the WinCo Subdivision, as it will be the location for a new WinCo Foods grocery store.
WinCo Foods is an employee-owned supermarket chain with more than 140 locations across the United States. Most are on the West Coast, with the closest store to Cheyenne located in Logan, Utah.
The company promotes low prices by cutting costs in ways not seen in all Cheyenne grocery stores. WinCo stores feature a bulk food section where customers can fill bags with as much as they need. They also do not accept credit cards, helping the company avoid processing fees.
In 1985, when WinCo was still known as Waremart Foods, it launched the Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP). Through this program, employees are granted company stock each year, giving them a stake in the business.
The stock is not publicly traded but is valued annually by an independent firm. Like a 401(k), the program helps employees save for retirement—while also motivating them to contribute to the company’s success, since the stock’s value depends on its performance.
Since the City Council’s annexation only took place two weeks ago, and WinCo Foods has yet submit the proper paper work to Cheyenne’s building division, it might be some time before we see WinCo Foods open in Cheyenne.
